Vintage Halloween Drag

The CBC Digital Archives just posted these great vignettes from the early 1970s, a time when it was considered legitimate entertainment to go down to Yonge St. and heckle the drag queens. Hundreds of people would gather outside bars like the St. Charles and the Manatee as the drag queens paraded past, and while a lot of the spectators were malicious there's at least one progressive person featured here.

You can learn more about the bars shown here at the CLGA, as well as on Jane Farrow and Gerald Hannon's annual "Yonge Street is Flaming" walk in May.

Hello, Triangle Program students!

Yesterday we had a visit from the students of the TDSB's Triangle Program. I'd really like to get a sense of what sort of presentations/exhibits/projects you guys would find interesting, so please let us know! Are you researching a particular person or organization? Do you want to know more about archives in general? Are you interested in volunteering? Some of you had some really good questions, and I'm not sure that we had time to get through them all, so if you're reading this please get in touch!

New Blog from the 519

The 519 Community Centre just launched a really cool blog in response to recent rumours that the Church/Wellesley Village is dying. Here's how they describe the project:

"Beginning today, The 519 will publish a new blog series called Centre Voices: It takes a Village to build community. Every Tuesday and Thursday for the next 6 weeks, staff, members, volunteers and friends of The 519 will share their experience of the Village, the role it plays in their life today and their hope for its future. In doing so we hope to create a positive dialogue about the future of our community, about the neighbourhood which we have served for nearly 35 years."

Be sure to check it out!

Big Thanks, Ya'll...

I just want to thank everyone on the Community Engagement Committee who helped out with our Grand Opening Party last weekend...despite the rain, we had a huge turnout and we raised some much-needed funds. Elizabeth, Dexter, Dennis, Rachel, Val, Vanessa, Robyn, Hinna, Nousheen, Nathalie, Brian and Rebecka: you guys are the best.
I'm looking forward to working with everyone on a couple of great new projects this fall...stay tuned!
